About Hydraulic Fracturing

PDF Print E-mail

frac3 Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, is a method by which oil and gas are removed from unconventional reservoirs like the Eagle Ford, Haynesville, and Montana shale plays in an efficient and economic manner. In these formations the oil and gas do not have sufficient porosity to flow into a well bore with the ease that they would in conventional reservoirs.

By pumping a mixture of water, sand, and specific additives at high pressure down the well bore and into the shale layer, minute fractures are created. This specialized mixture then flows into these fractures while the sand props them open, increasing the porosity and allowing the previously trapped oil and gas to flow freely into the well.

These fractures allow the oil and gas that were trapped within the shale formation to be channeled to the surface through the existing well bore.
